How Do The Funny Moms Do It?

Funny moms know how to keep their sense of humor through the challenges and stresses of motherhood. How do we learn to see the funny side of motherhood, that can so often be irritating and frustrating?

Love Yourself

I think that first of all we need to love ourselves. I know perhaps that sounds too gooey and silly, but the truth is that if we don't love ourselves we cannot truly love others. If we don't truly love others we're unlikely to keep a sense of humor in the tough moments.

Try This Test

I read about a test to see if you truly love yourself, and when I first did it, I didn't actually love myself. You stand in front of the mirror and look at your reflection, you smile at yourself and say "I love you." How does it make you feel? I cried when I first did it because I knew deep down it wasn't true; now it feels quite comfortable to say it.

Take Time For You

We also need to take time for ourselves. It may only be ten minutes, but make sure you have a little time for you every day. Use it to read a good book, have a bubble bath, go for a walk, get a massage or meditate, or whatever helps you to relax and mellow out.

Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

The funny moms know not to "sweat the small stuff". Being a perfectionist is only going to lead to stress and a total lack of humor. We're not perfect and we can't expect children to be perfect either. We need to accept them in all their noisiness, (add here anything that is an issue for you!) and untidiness, and deal with these things with relaxed humor.

Funny moms know not to take themselves too seriously. We need to learn to laugh at ourselves and be silly sometimes. I know I couldn't do that at all back when I was very low and I'm sure my sons suffered from the lack of it. Children are naturally exuberant and just love it when we join in their silly games. Here's me pretending to be a karate expert!!

Deal With Specific Issues

I think if there are specific issues with your children that are causing upset in the household then dealing with these specifically as a family will go some way to easing your emotional burden and allow you to stay upbeat.

Family Rules

It's good to sit everyone down for a family conference (school-aged children) and find solutions together. Make a list of family rules so that everyone can live happily together. Doing this with the kids will mean they have ownership of the rules and will be far more likely to obey them.

Plan Your Time

I find that being organised helps me to keep down stress and happiness and humor up. I make a list of tasks I need and want to do during the coming week, usually on a Sunday evening. I find that has really helped to increase my productivity, and that helps my mood. I feel good when I've got lots done!
