What Is Authoritarian Parenting Style Like?
Authoritarian parenting style is characterised by the parents' need for control, and their lack of empathy and warmth towards their child. The authoritarian parent definately sees themselves as "the Boss".
Fixed RulesAuthoritarian parenting includes a fixed set of rules that the child is expected to obey at all times. These rules often come from religious beliefs and teachings which are strongly held. The parent has fixed views about what they want the child to grow to become, and they mould them accordingly. Obedience is a Virtue This type of parent considers obedience a virtue and expects it at all times. Punishment Authoritarian parenting generally involves plenty of punishment. No misdemeanor is left unpunished, the punishment used may be harsh in nature. This is the parenting type most likely to use corporal punishment. You're Not Allowed a Mind of Your Own! The child of these parents is only allowed his own thoughts when they agree with his parents' views. The child should know her place. You Do Only What I Say The authoritarian parenting style involves controlling the child most of the time. He will be given tasks to perform around the home in order to learn to respect work. She will not be allowed much time to do as she wishes. It's Always Been This Way This type of parent is keen to preserve the order of things and stick within the traditional structure of family life. They are unlikely to rock the boat by doing the unexpected. My Word Is Final! The authoritarian parent has absolute power, she will not tolerate arguments or questioning of her judgement. There will be no discussions or give and take, and no explanations. Mum Knows Best! The authoritarian mum thinks she is infallible, she knows best! This parenting style was more common in times gone by and still is in certain cultures. Go to the
